Then install PlayonLinux, it makes Wine very easy to handle these days.
If it is just the odd program you can also use a virtual machine. I use an old, very trimmed down version of XP, it uses less then 90MB for the OS. It it does not need a whole lot of computing power. I even run it fine on an AMD Brazos processor.
But off course you can not make everybody happy. I think that should not be the goal. As we speak Chromebooks are doing well. I think Windows dominance is fading. And people often forget other simple solutions like borrow someone else computer. In daily life most people can do very well without Windows. That is why they are buying tablets. And Apple users too do not have all the Windows apps but feel fine. Some people even run their whole businesses from iPads.
And Linux has its own strong advantages, you get some very valuable things in return, like bullet proof security. easy maintenance, lots of free easy to install apps, community support, The security is going to be a major issue as E-crime is exploding. Banks no longer pay if your bank-account gets plundered, and identity-theft is another big worry. Do you really want a system that can be invaded with one mouse-click in browser or for viewing a maliced add, because you want to run that odd app? Be creative, run that program at school, at a friends place, borrow a computer, whatever.
The crowd elementary is aiming for does not need Wine or Word. Linux has all the apps common people need. Common people do not need Corel Draw or MS office. I simply look at my wife, all she does is browse, watch Youtube, play songs, chat, and type a text for work in which layout is not important. Common people only play simple games, the kind you can play on-line.
Maybe 10% of the people are in gaming and maybe 10% of the people need sophisticated apps like photoshop, corel draw, or create such extreme documents they must have MS office.
If you really want to please common people, you give them something SIMPLE. Simple is an asset for them. My wife is ready to protest when I want to change anything on the computer, she rejects updates no matter how nice the new features are.
The reason is most people are lost in the complexity of Windows and never have the feeling they actually control the system. Not so long ago Linux was lacking too. The interface often gave you the idea it was still in the scaffolds and an arbitrary collection of scattered objects.
But today the interface is given great care. Ubuntu has done a great job with Unity, even if the Hud may take some getting used too.
I think elementary is the pinnacle. It is simple, obvious, clean, beautifully crafted interface. Of course my wife was not keen on switching to Linux, not that she knows what that means. But any change scares her into thinking she will be lost again. So I did two clever things to convince her
1 - I installed elementary OS
2 - I put a picture with puppies on the desktop
She loved the puppies enough to give it a try (In the psychology of common people the background picture is part of the system). But only after letting me swear I would give her Windows back if she did not like it. As I foresaw this was going to be a one-shot trial.
I brilliantly planned it and as I expected she found it wonderfully simple. The browser is still the browser, chatting is straightforward, Writer has the buttons where she expects them to be. It prints when she pushes print, etc. playing song is simple too (not to much buttons). She Loooves that simplicity (and the puppies).
Now you may think she is a total noob. Actually she works as a full-time secretary using MS-Office all day for a decade. But that does not mean she feels comfortable in Windows. As she has no interest in computing at all, her knowledge is limited to exactly what she needs. Windows with all its endless possibilities for error frightens the hell out of her. That is why she wants no one to change anything on the PC.
She is not alone. 80-90% of people are exactly that way. Even the young generation that seems so handy in operating machines relies heavily on cognitive maps. They memorize the actions they need to do to get things done without understanding much about it. They all want it to be predictable (either obvious or the way they are used to).
For those people Linux and especially elementary is a delight. Why? Because is has what they need without all the excess they do not need. Did you ever examine the instrument panel of a car? It is extremely basic. That is what people want.
We should be realistic about one thing. No matter how superior Linux becomes, it will not be popular on the desktop unless it is pre-installed by resellers and manufacturers. Common people do not install an OS. They do not even have the foggiest idea what an OS is. If I told my wife Windows elementary is the new Windows, she would have swallowed that as well. Simply put a Windows flag somewhere and it is believed. (That could be plan B)
But in order to persuade companies to install Linux, it should be appealing, easy to use and maintain, difficult to ruin. Drivers is their affair. Ubuntu is getting there. Dell did a pilot in which they sold half a million Ubuntu PC's in Germany. Not only did they sell them, but the return rates were the same as with Windows PC's.
I personally can envision that elementary OS could one day become an attractive system to pre-install on computers too. It is extremely polished, a delight to work with. That means easy adaptation, satisfied customers and little support needs.
Wine? There is one thing we can learn from Steve Jobs, if you can not make it perfect, best leave it out altogether, it ruins the overall experience. We should not incorporate Wine unless we could do it the way Blackberry Playbook incorporates Android. In BB10 you install, run, hide, close Android apps the same way as native apps. You can not tell which apps are Android. That is the only way to do it, perfect!
We should accept that some people heavily rely on Corel Draw, MS Office, Photoshop. They are best off using Windows. A Linux patch, either Wine or Virtual Machine is always an inferior experience. We should not incorporate inferior experiences to market stuff, it will always backfire. No Windows-lookalike Linux ever got traction. The slightest difference is interpreted by people as inferior.
I think elementary team has the right professionalism. No compromise, but make it perfect. A great product does not have to do a million things to be perfect, just enough is far better. More important is aiming it at the right target group. And that also means being brave enough to ignore people that are not in the target group. Windows wants to be everything to everyone. The real strength of Linux is diversity. Distro's for every kind of need.
I don't want cats or puppies. "If you think your users are idiots, only idiots will use it."
People are not idiots, but the first impression is very important. If something looks appetizing they are more inclined to try it. My wife happens to like puppies. I knew she would like elementary, I only had to convince her, switching is not as bad as a new Windows version.
If it comes to computers, most people are noobs. That is why they want it to be simple. And they are right, a Windows-PC is far to complex for them to feel in control and safe. Google Chromebooks are now a best-seller for Acer, selling better than W8. It is inexpensive, safe, and does not need maintenance (And it is Linux too). I think a Linuxbook with elementary OS might be an attractive offer too. As it is a very light system it can run on inexpensive hardware and still fly.
Getting good design down in the desktop environment is more important than fixing Windows apps in WINE in my opinion. I'm sorry, I love Linux, but it's always been made by people who have absoluteley no idea how design works. I don't mean to insult anyone but Gnome Shell and KDE are both hideous out of the box. Applications included in either DE are often not consistent in design. Linux desperately needs design oriented people. I'm glad elementary is here to tackle this issue that's been plaguing Linux for ages.
So, you start with 10. Feedback gets you down to maybe 3-7. You make 10 for each of those. That's 30-70. You get feedback on those...huh, sorry, I don't see it happen...human brains have great difficulty holding 7 things at once...
I would start with 7 at most, based on aesthetics and function. I would cut it down to 5 by simulating actual workflows. I would get feedback on those 5. I would ask reviewers to eliminate 2. I would use their feedback to improve the last 3. I would do more workflow simulations. I would present the last 3 and ask reviewers to discard 1. I would be left with 2, let them simmer for a few days, look inside myself and pick the final design.
The idea of the second round is that it distills the design down and gets you thinking specifics. For example my round one sketch might have had a sidebar with an album and the title, but in the second round I could do a variation on the typography, change the size of the album, etc.
I'd say the ideal is to go forward with one, but maybe two and at most three. There is no reason you should go with seven designs. And then the idea is to look at the 10 iterations as a group. So if you happened to pick two from round 1, you'd look at the 10 iterations of the first idea, then look at the ten iterations of the second idea. You'd always be looking at ten designs at a time, hence the name.
I'm testing (just using perhaps) luna on my laptop and must say: It's just great! Keep up good work. Design is great!
What is the reason behind the decision to remove the base idea from wingpanel? I think that was the best thing in the whole project, a little top right oriented panel overlapping the maximized windows titlebar. It's becasuse window buttons arranged to the left and right side?

no it's because you could get windows stuck under it with no way to get them out of there if you don't know the Super+Drag method of moving windows. But this is neither the time or place to ask this.
