elementary ♥ Yorba

elementary is teaming up with Yorba to work on their upcoming mail app, Geary, in addition to working with them on Shotwell's UI. We've been in talks with Yorba about Geary and have made the decision to transition focus from Postler to Geary at a recent elementary Council meeting.

The goals of Postler and Geary are the same—to create a mail client for GTK+ desktops that is on par with any webmail experience, while utilizing the unique advantages of a fully native application. Because of this, we've decided that we are ceasing development on Postler to work with Yorba on Geary. Despite the efforts of porting to GTK+3 and creating a revamped interface, Postler just wasn’t catching up in backend work. In addition, Postler was struggling with a lack of manpower. Working with Yorba guarantees more manpower, increased collaboration, and less duplication of effort. All of which we love.

Christian Dywan, creator of Midori and Postler, has already begun work submitting bugs and patches for Geary. In addition, we've been starting to test how well Geary works in Pantheon. Christian also plans to port features from Postler to Geary. We’re really excited to collaborate with Yorba and can’t wait to bring this incredible new mail experience to our combined users.

We, along with other OSes like Ubuntu and Fedora, also ship Shotwell, another Yorba creation and the best GTK-based photo management app. We look forward to working with Yorba to help bring our design philosophy to Shotwell while retaining the unique features of each target desktop. Daniel Foré has already started with some discussion and mockups, and we plan to work even closer with them moving forward.

As Adam Dingle said, Yorba was founded to “bring free media applications to the next level.” elementry jives with that. It’s an exciting time for elementary and Yorba both as we work to bring the best apps with the best design to millions of users.
