Keyboard Shortcuts in Luna Beta One

One of the more common questions since releasing the first beta has been, "What are some keyboard shortcuts?" We're still figuring out how to best expose these to users, but for now we thought we could clue you in to some here.

⌘+Space App Launcher
Alt+Tab Window Switcher
⇧+Alt+Tab Switch Windows Backwards
⌘+W Window Overview
⌘+A Window Overview (Across All Workspaces)
⌘+Left/Right Switch Workspace
⌘+S Workspace Overview
⌘+0 New Workspace
⇧+⌘+Left/Right Move Window with Workspace
Ctrl+⌘+Left/Right Snap Window to Half of Workspace
Ctrl+⌘+Up/Down Maximize/Unmaximize Window
⌘+L Lock Screen
⌘+Click+Drag Move Window
⌘+Secondary (Right) Click+Drag Resize Window
= Super (Windows or Command key), = Shift

We hope these are useful to you, and we'll be working out how to display these and more shortcuts to our users in the near future. Thanks everyone who's testing, and remember to keep filing bugs.

Happy testing!

In windows, you can close window using Alt + F4, and if no window on desktop,it will popup the shutdown dialog. I use this feature to shuttdown system usually. could elementary add this feature?

Very helpful. Is there any way to change the app launcher shortcut from super-spacebar to just super? That would make things so much easier.

Are there any terminal shortcuts? I don't see a settings menu for this. I'd like to be able to open a new tab, and switch between tabs.

You can open a new tab using Ctrl + Shift + T and switch between tabs using Alt + n i.e. Alt + 2 to switch to the second tab.

Try simply PrintScreen. The screenshot will be in your Pictures folder.

You can see/change the shortcut in System Settings > Keyboard > Shortcuts > Screenshots

Is it panned to support ⌘+tab cross-workspace-switching of apps?

I'm really missing that. Moving the mouse down to plank to click is taking to long…

Btw: The site is really slow atm.

I always wished that applications in plank could be assigned to super + numberical key in a left to right order.

⌘+w, ⌘+a     OK,  but why can't after that chose window without mouse?  This is useless. Can't use arrows/tab to select window and them enter or space to confirm?

Gnome3 can't do it by default. I guess that elemantary depends on it.

I think developers must implement this feature.

Will we see an editable shortcuts list by first release? Don't get me wrong, I think that the shortcuts make sense, but I'm currently using a CR-48, and the Super key is inconveniently placed for this shortcut layout.

I agree. I just wish I could use the super/windows/meta key for slingshot, just like unity's dash and gnome 3's whatever thingy.

Hi,
Firstly awesome OS.
This may be something on my side, but ctrl+super+right doesn't seem to work (left does). Has this been noted elsewhere?
If it is my problem, what might be causing it?

How about Super + digits for virtual desktop switching (this is actually very intuitive since Ctrl + digits to switch between tabs in browsers, etc)?

Gemn

There isn't really the option for that.. They took away the minimise button because of being able to have a new workspace as far as I gather. But to minimise from the keyboard, Ctrl+Alt+NumPad0

vla_ve
Posted 25 weeks 4 days ago

This is not really related to keyboard shortcuts, but a suggestion. I think it'll be nice to have a way to see all the apps in the current desktop and the desktops bar; just something like a super+w combined with super+s. (like when you press super/activities button in gnome-shell)

Wait, so Mac users are preferred in elementary? I thought Mac is the opposite of freedom hence Linux? That pisses me off.

You should probably find out your local laws about selling electronics :p But as far as our side is concerned, elementary is free software available to be redistributed however you see fit (including sale).

could you add the pantheon-terminal specific shortcuts to the list? i know they're not for the window manager, but i think this'd be a good place to have them. i'm used to ctrl+pgup/pgdn to cycle between tabs in the terminal, and it took some time to track down the shortcuts for tab-switching in pantheon-terminal in a launchpad question (ctrl+shift+left/right).

also, thanks so much for all the hard work, using Luna has been a real pleasure so far. it's nice to see that there are still folks with good sense doing desktop design, when the last few years had cast doubt on the fact. bravo!

Hi, how to minimize the window????

Chdslv
Posted 25 weeks 4 days ago

Install Dconf-tools.
Navigate to org>pantheon>desktop>gala>appearance and change close:maximize to :minimize, maximize, close
Your minimize button in the elementary theme would not show, it'd be a ghost next to the maximize button.
If you change the elementary themes to something else, you'd get all three buttons showing.
To do that, you'd have to install Gnome-Tweak-Tool, not Ubuntu-Tweak. Of course, it'd pull in the Gnome-shell too. Interestingly, the opening/closing/mmaximizing/minimizing windows in the Gnome-shell would work, just as in the
Pantheon session!

Every time a real estate agent first offers anyone along with delivers coming from loan providers, they generally utilize the phrase "good trust appraisal.Inch Which means the actual specialist is convinced that the supply will certainly encompass the final terms of the package, however this might not be true. In some instances, the lender may well alter the terms according to your own genuine request and you will wind up spending better pay or perhaps extra fees. A lot of homebuyers just feel that a broker delivers an improved cope in comparison with may get automatically, however this is not always the truth. A few loan companies offer homebuyers the same terminology and also costs they offer you banks (at times, better still). This by Internet padyay loans means is painful to buy about yourself to determine if your broker is basically promoting quite a lot.

To display all of the shortcuts, doesn't Ubuntu have something where if you hold down the super button for a few seconds, an overlay pops up on the desktop that lists all of them?

Designer
cassidyjames

Yes, Ubuntu's Unity shell has that. We have a blueprint where we're discussing something similar, or something better. :)

I think you should let the user choose if he's using a regular keyboard or a mac one. I had some troubles finding this out and now that I read some comments I realize this issue is very common. It seems it's the same but it is not, for example, super is equal to comand in mac but command is equal to ctrl in a regular keyboard. That's why you should press super instead of alt (like any other Linux distro) to drag. I don't know how to do it, but other distros I've tried automatically detects the keyboard and works with command+click or alt+click depending on the keyboard (I've tried this in a mac just connecting a regular keyboard to it and it still recognizes it like a regular one).

Super is not the same thing as control. An Apple keyboard has nothing to do with it and will contain both a super and control key. As indicated in the post, "⌘ = Super (Windows or Command key)". Not control. That is a completely separate key.

marcindomanski
Posted 26 weeks 2 days ago

Hi,

do you have any plans to let the user change some of the shortcuts, like for example the Window Overview, which is bound to ⌘+W?

On Ubuntu, I am used to a different combination, namely ⌘+`, which is quite handy because the ` key is just above TAB. But unfortunately, it looks like the ` key doesn't work at all if you try changing the key combination using dconf (you can do this in dconf under org.pantheon.desktop.gala.behavior key). Is this a known issue, or should I perhaps file a bug? If yes, what would be the best place to do it (which project)?

SummXo
Posted 26 weeks 2 days ago

Try setting it to "<Super>Above_Tab" in Dconf Editor. It works here.

marcindomanski
Posted 26 weeks 2 days ago

Awesome, it works here, too, thanks! How did you figure this out? :) Also, do you know why "< Alt >Above_Tab" doesn't work? I thought it would, but unfortunately it doesn't ... ah, so close :)

In my previous comment, I said I use ⌘ + `, but in fact it's Alt + `. I have both keys swapped (you can do this in Keyboard Layout Options -> Alt/Win key behaviour), so I looked at ⌘ when I was writing my comment, but clear forgot it was Alt actually.

SummXo
Posted 25 weeks 6 days ago

I think it's because that shortcut is already set on org.gnome.desktop.wm.keybindings.switch-group (that's how I found out about the "Above_Key" thing, btw xD), try to unset that shortcut and then if it still doesn't work, try setting the Expose Windows shortcut in gala again (had to do it to get the shortcut to work). Oh, and if still doesn't work, try restarting gala by typing "gala --replace" on Slingshot.

marcindomanski
Posted 25 weeks 6 days ago

Awesome, it worked! (had to reset the Expose Windows shortcut, too)

Thanks again, you're a hero! :D

Now, let's just wait for this to be fixed:

http://bazaar.launchpad.net/~gala-dev/gala/trunk/view/head:/src/Widgets/...

Turns out you can exit Expose Windows only by pressing w, a or ESC. It would be really nice if one could navigate between windows with arrow keys, and select with Enter.

Hey guys!

First of all, thank you for your work! The OS is great and works from the box, that's what all non-linux people expect, and that will make it more and more popular.

I have a complete offtopic question here. Is it possible to setup touchegg to work properly with Luna? I know they had some sort of incompatibility with Unity as it reserves some gestures for monitor touches, but as elementary get rid of Unity, will that become possible to configure multitouch?

Thanks again and sorry for putting this questions in the thread here.
