startup issue
the computer hangs in the gray/brown screen with "e" at startup, just before the login screen.
any advice on how to solve this without erasing and reinstalling elementaryOS?

If press ESC as soon as the "e" appears, it will print info on what it's doing and you'll be able to see where exactly it hangs. Maybe somebody could help you if you took a photo of that and uploaded it somewhere.
we need more info in order to help you...the log files for sure...and maybe some info about your hardware..if you mess with some configuration before the last start..and so on..
This may be caused by various reasons. You can find some info in log files (located in /var/log), but IDK which ones may contain information you need.
