Try 'Gnome Mplayer'. I guess this is what people are asking for.

I think use VLC plus an elementary skin is a great idea.

Hi!, i would not recommend to try with VLC, yeah, maybe it would play "almost" all files (i had always issues playing HD files), but there are new video player options based on mplayer with promising future (currently they're very good VP).
As Dan says, working in a VP is a long effort, but maybe changing the default option for a VP? :)
Never had a single problem with VLC, either Windows or Linux.

VLC and UMPlayer have both the same "problem". They use Qt instead of GTK. I like UMPlayer very much and I use it as my main player but elementarists said no to Qt. It's an unlucky decision since nearly all the good video-players use Qt frontend.

I'd suggest you collaborate with the guys developing Gnome Media Player (https://launchpad.net/gnome-media-player) and perhaps come up with catchy elementary-esque name. Development does appear to have slowed of late, but their design ethos appear to meld well with that of elementary (a simple user interface and modular, in the sense that it can use multiple extant back ends including GStreamer, VLC and Xine).

I like that idea. Gnome-mplayer has a lot of work done, and with elementary helps coul be something like UMplayer but in GTK :D

I would also try to go with VLC player in elementary style. It got the most features and plays almost everything.

There are some VLC's that have been themed to an elementary style: http://cclax.me/4l (That's a dark one.)
Yup! And it's called Audience ;)
A good way to create a video player is using the C VLC lib (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/libvlc.html and http://wiki.videolan.org/Libvlc) with a Vala interface.

I would like to recommend:
*UMPLAYER: http://www.umplayer.com/
Features: http://www.umplayer.com/features/
